Karley Aiken is a dedicated educator with over eight years of teaching experience across different continents. Her journey has taken her from the United States to South Korea and now China, where she continues to inspire and nurture students. In this interview, Ms. A shares her teaching philosophy, experiences, and insights into the unique cultural landscape of China.

Ms. A's teaching career has spanned diverse cultures and classrooms. Originally from the United States, she began her journey in her home country before venturing abroad. "I've taught in South Korea and now China," she says. "Additionally, I've taught online to over 3,000 students across more than 25 countries." Her international experience has not only broadened her horizons but also enriched her teaching methods and perspectives.

This is Ms. A's first time in China, and she has been here for six weeks. Interestingly, her fascination with China began when she was in third grade. "I spent a year researching China on the computer every day," she says. "Now, years later, I'm here, and it's been an incredible experience." She describes China as "magical" and unlike anything she has ever experienced.
When asked why she chose to teach at MIC, Ms. A emphasizes the supportive environment the school offers. "I was looking for an international school with a strong and supportive faculty," she explains. "MIC really champions its students, and I find it to be very welcoming." This supportive atmosphere has been crucial for both her professional growth and her ability to connect with students.
Ms. A's approach to teaching is deeply rooted in the belief that all students have the potential to learn. "Regardless of their background, capability, or circumstances, every student can learn something," she asserts. She views the role of a teacher as that of a mentor, guiding and inspiring students rather than simply instructing them. "A safe, welcoming, and supportive environment is key to learning," she adds. Furthermore, she believes that creativity is the foundation of education and the catalyst for learning.

Ms. A shares two memorable stories about her students. The first is about a student who initially struggled with English and appeared disinterested. "He was sleeping in class and not paying attention," she recalls. However, after understanding his language difficulties, she changed her approach. "I started praising any effort he made and encouraged him to express himself in his own words," she says. Gradually, he began to participate more, and by the end of the semester, he was the only student in his class to complete his homework entirely in his own words.
The second story is about a 10th-grade student who joined the school late due to personal reasons. Despite her shyness, she showed remarkable creativity in her assignments and presentations. "Her creativity inspires other students," Ms. A says. "I'm very proud of her."

Ms. A is a strong advocate for using technology in the classroom. "My classes are very interactive," she says. As a musician, she incorporates music, rhythm, and repetition into her lessons to make them more engaging. She also uses real-world experiences and various applications like Canva, Formative, and quizzes. One of her favorite tools is AI, which she teaches students to use responsibly. "AI can be a powerful tool for learning when used correctly," she notes.
Ms. A's journey as a global educator is marked by her passion for teaching, her innovative methods, and her deep respect for cultural diversity. Her experiences in China, while challenging, have only deepened her commitment to fostering a supportive and creative learning environment for all her students.
