Recently, Majestic International College (MIC) successfully held an enlightening seminar titled "How to Master Applications to Oxbridge, G5, and Top Hong Kong Universities?".
The event featured an esteemed panel of guests, including former Cambridge Chief Admissions Officer Dr. Essex, Mr. Qianli Xia (a Cambridge Mathematics graduate and University of Edinburgh Astronomy PhD), and Mr. Peter Liu (an Oxford Engineering graduate). Together, they provided students and parents with a rich and insightful perspective on strategic educational planning.
As a distinguished guest speaker, Dr. Essex delved deeply into the core criteria for Oxbridge admissions. He emphasized that beyond outstanding academic records, interview performance is particularly crucial. "The interview is essentially a 'mini supervision'," Dr. Essex highlighted. "We focus on the candidate's thought processes when tackling challenging problems, their communication skills, and their ability to learn from hints—not just their knowledge base."
Mr. Xia further elaborated, noting that successful Oxbridge candidates typically possess three key traits: independent thinking, genuine passion for their subject, and strong self-study and adaptability skills. "The pace at Oxbridge is intense and demanding, with only around 12 hours of formal teaching per week. It heavily tests students' capacity for independent learning and interaction with tutors. Therefore, admissions officers must ascertain whether a student can thrive in such an environment."
The seminar disclosed several valuable sets of admissions data. For instance, in the Oxford Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT), Chinese students typically need to score around 80% to secure an interview, a higher threshold than for UK-based students. However, Dr. Essex clearly stated, "Admissions test scores are merely a threshold. Once the basic requirement is met, all candidates start from the same line in the interview stage. Interview performance is the ultimate deciding factor."
Mr. Peter Liu systematically analyzed the latest application landscape for universities in Hong Kong. He pointed out that as Hong Kong universities have announced an increase in non-local student quotas to 40%, competition has intensified accordingly. "Hong Kong universities favor well-rounded talents who combine 'British academic rigor' with 'American holistic qualities'. They value not only academic achievements but also assess teamwork and social responsibility through various interview formats."
He specifically reminded applicants that the application cycle for Hong Kong universities can be lengthy, lasting 9-11 months, and some institutions may give "silent rejections". He advised students to adopt a multi-country application strategy to enhance their chances of success.
For younger students, all three guest speakers unanimously recommended exploring academic interests as early as possible. Dr. Essex expressed, "Now is the time to try various activities and discover genuine passions. Participating in relevant competitions and independently reading about cutting-edge developments in subjects are excellent ways to start."
Regarding interview preparation, the panel suggested students practice discussing their personal statements in English, engage in mock interviews, and develop the ability to articulate their thought process clearly under pressure. "Having the courage to admit you don't know something and proactively seeking hints is far more valuable than remaining silent or pretending to understand," shared Dr. Essex.
